About This Item

Bombay: Fort Printing Press for the Gatha Society, 1918. First edition of this scarce volume. Quarto Photographic frontispiece, xii, 600 pp. Modern red fabricoid with gilt spine and cover lettering, red endpapers to match. Some minor worming (expected in such a climate) to the first three leaves (half-title, frontispiece and a very small amount on the edge of the title page. Else a very clean copy of this scarce volume. Dr Hoshang Jamasp Dastur (1833-1908) [full name; Shams-ul-Ulema Sardar Khan Bahadur Dr. Hoshang Jamasp Dastur, M.A., Ph.D., C.I.E.] was an eminent scholar of Oriental languages and Zoroastrian scriptures, originally from Gujarat State (India). From a family of renowned Zoroastrian priests, he became an employee of the Colonial Service, assisting the British government during the 1857 Indian Mutiny, or the First War of Independence. His scholarship received recognition from the British government and his works were published with patronage from the Government of Bombay. This volume contains over sixty papers from multiple scholars on numerous topics relating to Persia, its history, culture, literature, the Zoroastrian religion and Persians abroad. Parsis are originally from Iraq but persecution forced them to immigrate to India, where many of them became successful industrialists. Dastur Jamasp had a boy's school named after him in 1914.
