Bound in black half cloth with bold, bright and sharp titles, orange paper-wrapped boards, very clean, faintly rubbed edges. Paste-down and endpaper near inner hinge have blue fading from spine cloth. Upper edge of text block also has some of this faded blue. Solid, tight, square binding. Internals quite nice--clean and free from any markings. Jacket unclipped, clean, spine head and heel chipped, Inside of jacket has faded blue places from spine cloth. Dashiell Hammett's great original contribution to American Literature was the creation of the hard-boiled detective-- the Continental OP and Sam Spade. Diane Johnson traces the origins of these characters in Hammett's own experience as a Pinkerton agent in the West and shows how his vision of the world was shaped by this lonely, hard and often amoral existence.
