About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., 1889.. First edition. 8vo. xvi, 494, (2) pp. Publisher's green cloth, gilt lettered and ruled to spine, neatly rebacked preserving most of the original spine, book label of the entomologist Norman Hickin to the front free endpaper, another prior's owner's ink stamp to the head of the title page, a further old ink stamp of "Hotel Continental Mustapha-Alger" to the header of the first page of the preface. Lacking the frontispiece portrait of Wallace but with the folding colour map (this also featuring the hotel stamp on the verso) and 37 text figures. Some light wear to the cloth, else very good. Wallace's letter to Darwin from the far east in 1858 led to their collaboration and prompted Darwin to publish "The Origin of Species" a year later. This work updates his theories for a society where evolution "is now universally accepted as the order of nature in the organic world" (Preface).
