About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1890. First US Edition . Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcovers, two-volume match set bound in dark green cloth, decorated on front with stamped outline of Africa and decorated in black and gilt. Volume 1 shows slightly more choose one than volume 2 and both books show scuffing to the cloth along with some spotting. Edges and corners also show bumps/wear. The internal bindings are good, no hinge issues. Dark brown end pages in front and rear are free of any personal bookplates, no library markings. The second front end page and title pages of both books contains the original owner signature. This is lightly written in pencil and can be erased if desired. The only other handwriting found in the book is on the second to the last end page, which has 1/2 page of notes, also written in pencil - though it is darker and more pronounced than the light signatures, so they may be difficult to erase. NOTE: This set would normally grade as VG+ or better but the map(s) in volume 1 are missing. Volume 2 does contain one map which does have some tearing along the folds. This map is of the route of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition through Africa. This is an attractive set but is priced accordingly because of the missing maps in volume 1. V1 contains 547 pages and V2 contains 540 pages (1087 total). This is a two-volume set that weighs over 6 pounds. Non-US sales or priority mail shipping option will likely require additional postage.

Terms of Sale

Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Purchases will ship by US Media Mail or Priority Mail (if buyer selects) and higher priced items may have insured placed on the order and will typically ship within one business day. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 5 lbs., but only in unusual cases. Insurance is available upon request though we normally place insurance on any item of $75 or higher at no additional cost to the buyer. Non-US sales will ship by First Class International or Global Priority. Additional postage may be required for multiple volume books or books weighing over 4 lbs.

We always take extra care in packaging and shipping. Books are typically wrapped in packing paper or bubblewrap before packaged in a sturdt shipping box. All orders, even those shipped by US Media Mail, will be given a USPS tracking number which will be sent to the buyer so they will know when to expect arrival. Please let us know if there is a book with incorrect or missing photos. We recently moved the inventory to Biblio and a title or two may have had issues with the photos being transferred over.

Yesterday's Book shop is owned and operated by a disabled veteran. Due to my limitations, I often have to rely on speech-to-text software to list the books. If the description has typos ("and pages" instead of "end pages", pace downs instead of pastedowns, guilt instead of gilt, etc,) PLEASE let me know so I can correct the listing. The software spells words by phonetics and can make errors that I may not catch.

There is a 30 day money back guarantee if the book arrives damaged or is not as described. Please contact us prior if you have any issues with your purchases and we will make sure you are taken care of.

About Yesterday's Book Shop (Member IOBA)

Yesterday's Book Shop is an independent, family-owned establishment. The store first opened in 1966 under the name Collector's Corner and was located in Western Maryland. The Collector's Corner dealt mainly in books but also sold stamps and assorted ephemera. In 1975 the name was changed to Yesterday's Book Shop when the store only offered books and printed matter. In the early 2000s the brick and mortar store was closed and now we only sell online.

All of the book pictures were taken at the time the book was listed and we never use generic or stock photos in any listing. If you would like additional photos or information on any listing please let us know and we will be more than happy to comply.
