London: R. Alistair McAlpine, 1974. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. Sidney Nolan. illustrations, 56p. Original boards. dj. 32 cm. Printed edition of 1000. 50 of the copies, not including ours, had an original drawing numbered and signed by the Nolan, Melville and Lynn. A literary hoax. The poems were originally published in 1944 and soon exposed as a literary hoax but they had a certain surrealist appeal. Nolan added artwork for this edition thirty years later.

The Ern Malley literary hoax perpetrated on Angry Penguins editor Max Harris by poets James McAuley and Harold Stewart is now the stuff of Australian literary legend. The hoax revisited (and reprinted) in this 2017 edition with its introduction by Albert Tucker and recollection by Max Harris.
