About This Item

London: Robert Hale, 1967. 189pp. Book clean, mildly cocked. Spine firm. Slight colour loss on dark charcoal boards. Light foxing flecks on text-block edges, and slightly tanned leaves, else good. Art-illustrated [Barbara Walton] dustjacket edgeworn, small corner nips, fingermarked on rear [text] panel, otherwise lightly flecked. A powerful story, set in the early 19th century in Cape Town, South Africa, where the white settlers, both British and Dutch, are engaged in a bitter struggle against the Kaffir race. Hugh Wentworth, a British Cavalry officer, weary of European wars, arrives hoping to farm in peace. He becomes embroiled in the war, his life exacerbated by Rose, his childhood sweetheart, now living in Cape Town and married to a British officer . . . Factual background for this narrative is based on the journals of Andries Stockenstrom, controversially appointed Lieutenat-Governor of Eastern Province in 1835. Book weight approx. 340g. Postage charge will be reduced as this item will post under 500g. packed weight.. First Edition. Hardcover and Dustjacket. Good+/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
