About This Item

Indianapolis: Bobbs-Merrill, 1929. Hardcover. Fine/Very Good. First edition. Slight crease on the spine else fine in a nice, very good plus, spine-faded dustwrapper with some rubbing at the extremities. The author's first book, basis for the George Hill film *Min and Bill*, with a screenplay by Frances Marion and Marion Jackson and featuring Marie Dressler and Wallace Beery in their first foray as an unlikely romantic duo. Dressler won an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Min over fellow nominees Irene Dunne, Marlene Dietrich, Norma Shearer, and Ann Harding. The Dressler-Beery partnership proved so appealing that they were reunited three years later in both *Tugboat Annie* and *Dinner at Eight*. Lorna Moon bore a son out of wedlock to director William DeMille, with the child being raised by Cecil B. DeMille. After the child was born, Moon was in dire straits and her close friends Frances Marion and Mary Pickford helped to get the book published, and successfully pushed to have the film made, although Moon died soon afterward. Extremely uncommon.

Synopsis

Originally published in 1929, and subsequently banned in her hometown of Strichen, Scotland, Lorna Moon's novel Dark Star was considered too racy, and hitting too close to home for the small town neighbors who saw themselves in her writings. Dark Star , like it's author, was ahead of it's time. The story is about Nancy, a young girl from a rural Scottish village with extreme fantasies of romance and high lineage. It explores the social structures, sexual interactions, and the hypocracy that surrounds each small village. This book was the author's first, and is the basis for the George Hill film Min and Bill .
