Twohigs 1991 The Dark Secret of Béal na Bláth also argues most plausibly that Collins was killed by a gunshot, though almost by accident. Twohig interviewed Mike ODonoghue and Bob Doherty who claim to have been passing the ambush site by chance and got involved when they saw a Free State officer standing on the road, taking what amounted to a well-aimed pot shot.
