First edition, first impression, of Sackville-West's peculiar and brooding novel, dedicated to her lover and sister-in-law Gwen St Aubyn, who provides the inspiration for the main character. Octavo. Original green cloth, spine lettered in dark green, map to front pastedown. With dust jacket. Map and jacket drawn by Ben Nicolson, the author's son. Ownership inscription to front free endpaper effaced. Spine a little sunned with slight lean, light marking to cloth, half-title loosening at foot, some foxing to contents, a good copy in good jacket, chipped and soiled, all intact without repair. Cross & Ravenscroft-Hulme A30a; Woolmer 351.
