Dare to Vote!

Sydney: Ant Press, 2012. Oppen, Monica. 16mo. (22)pp. One of fifty copies. An exploration of Australia's system of democracy and of the principle of voting rights, Oppen's book plumbs the ambivalence many modern voters feel toward democracy to analyze the ironies of current governments. The bulk of the book is devoted to a series of linocuts foregrounding the individual letters of "democracy," pairing these with words that evoke the ambiguity and tensions of modern governance. These appear against a running background of a faceless crowd, a subtle declaration that the ultimate decision, in execution and impact, remains with the populace. At the end is a fold-out daring the reader to vote "Yes" or "No" for or against democracy, with an article by researcher Chris Berg detailing the intricacies of modern democracy, especially regarding its coexistence with capitalism. Bound in screen-printed card wrappers backed in cloth. Housed in a four-flap box, which includes two HB pencils. Mild soiling to box, else fine.

Description:
London: Dean & Son, 1910. Hall, Gladys. Tall quarto. 12ff. First edition. Illustrated throughout in color and black & white by Gladys Hall and Eugenie Richards. A series of poems that follow the activities of the cherubic Peggy and Teddy. The artwork by Hall and Richards is dramatically similar to that of Grace Drayton, who created the Campbell's Soup kids. Hall worked primarily for Dean, and not much is known about her or Richards. Either because of its size or construction, this book is quite rare, with no copies known to be held at any institution. In publisher's pictorial dark blue cloth over beveled boards, which show some faint edgewear. Archival repairs to wrinkles and tears along margins, text block likely recased. Overall, a very good copy.

Description:
North Hills: Bird & Bull Press, 1964. Octavo. 91pp. One of 200 copies. A biography on the life and work of Thomas Bird Mosher, the remarkable New England publisher and literary pirate. The Passionate Pirate is one of Henry Morris's earlier titles. In making it, he was plagued with both papermaking and printing problems, since he had recently acquired a new papermaking beater and a new printing press. The first bindings on the books were disastrous, and the entire edition had to be rebound. This copy is inscribed by Morris "For my good friend Remy Green" and dated 11/15/64. Remy John Barcham Green worked for, and later ran, J. Barcham Green Ltd., which operated the Hayle Mill in Kent, England. Morris was in frequent contact with Remy and his father Jack (John Barcham Green II) when he first began his papermaking journey in the 1950s. Morris says of his initial correspondence with Jack Green: "I really sent a barrage of questions and I must say that Mr. Green was extremely kind as he not only answered… Read More

Petersham: Ant Press, 2011. paperback. 8 x 9.5 inches. paperback. 190 pages. The Silent Scream: Political and Social Comment in Books by Artists presents not only a companion catalogue to an exhibition held at the Monash University Rare Books Library, but also a journey through some of humanity's most inhumane and hypocritical moments. The catalogue provides insights into 77 influential books and works presented in book form in the past 90 years. Monica Oppen and Peter Lyssiotis, both practicing artists, lend their unique perspective in the social content and the techniques behind the production of these books. The book begins with a short preface by Sarah Bodman about the messages that can be portrayed with written word. Throughout history, many texts and books have been banned, censored, and even burned in an effort to prevent their contents from spreading. This exhibition brings to light some of the bold texts that have survived time such as those that have endured wars and revolutions,… Read More
