Toronto: Collins Publishers, 1977. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. First Canadian edition, octavo size, 637 pp., signed by John Fowles. First Edition stated, first Canadian edition. The author was named by the Times newspaper of UK as one of the 50 greatest British writers since 1945, perhaps best known for his novel "The French Lieutenant's Woman" which was made into a highly successful film starring Meryl Streep. This novel, published eight year's after The French Lieutenant's Woman, is partly autobiographical in nature and explores topics such as aesthetics, the philosophy of cinema, archeology, imperialism and the differences between Britain and the United States (Wiki). As the dust jacket states, "Daniel Martin is a skillful probing of man's potential ability to know himself..."

___DESCRIPTION: Green cloth boards with copper gilt lettering on the spine, top edge of textblock stained green, orange endpapers; octavo size, pagination: [i-viii] [1] 3-629, signed by John Fowles on the title page, with the date 1977 (year of publication). Second state dust jacket design by Steve Snider shows the publisher as Little, Brown on the spine, a summary of the novel on the front flap running onto the back flap followed by the author's bio, author photo on rear panel.

___CONDITION: Volume is overall in very good+ condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, corners barely rubbed, and free of prior owner markings. There is a hint of sunning to the top of the boards, a small amount of soiling to the cloth and a very small bump to the bottom edge of the front board. The unclipped dust jacket has a gold foil sticker displaying a price of $19.95 and is overall very good+ or even near fine, other than some sunning to the spine and some minor edgewear.
