First Edition/First Printing (no later states on the verso). DJ has light shelf-wear present to the DJ extremities (light chipping near the crown and heel of the spine; spine lightly sunned). Bound in grey cloth boards with figure of a man blindstamped in red on the front board. No ownership marks present. Text is clean and free of marks, binding tight and solid, boards has some light soil present to the edges of the boards. Expecting to be inducted into the army to fight in World War II, Joseph has given up his job and carefully prepared for his departure to the battlefront. When a series of mix-ups delays his induction, he finds himself facing a year of idleness. Saul Bellow's first novel documents Joseph's psychological reaction to his inactivity while war rages around him and his uneasy insights into the nature of freedom and choice.
