Her books were particularly renowned and were awarded the Pulitzer Prize-winning So Big, Show Boat and made into the 1927 musical version, Cimarron; adapted into the1931 movie which won the Academy Award for Best Picture, and Giant which was made into the 1956 Hollywood film. </br></br>She was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to a Hungarian-born Jewish sales person, Jacob Charles Ferber, and his Milwaukee, Wisconsin-born wife, Julia Neumann Ferber, who was of German Jewish lineage. After residing in Chicago, Illinois, and Ottumwa, Iowa, at the age of 12 Ferber and her family lived at Appleton, Wisconsin, where she finished high school and enrolled at Lawrence University. She had newspaper careers at the Appleton Daily Crescent and the Milwaukee Journal before releasing her first story.
