London: J. M. Dent, 1893. First edition, limited to 1,500 copies. Volume One only (Includes Books 1-9 as published), in extremely rare dust jacket. Published London: J. M. Dent, 1893. 4to., 8 1/2" x 10", lxiv + 455 pages, illustrated with full page plates, vignettes, borders, in-text decorations and cover design by Aubrey Beardsley. From elaborate and formal William Morris design elements to shocking eroticism and striking decadence - as in the case of the frontispiece plate of Arthur. Cream linen cloth with elaborate gilt design and fancy titles. Top edge gilting, 3-color ribbon marker bound in. Slight foxing to the cloth, endpapers toned along the perimeters, some wrinkling to the tissue guard at frontis, else very good, attractive; binding square and tight in a rare dust…

He designed plates for Picturesque views ... in Staffordshire and Shropshire (Birmingham, William Emans, 1830-1831), and for A new and compendious history, of the county of Warwick (Birmingham, William Emans, 1830). Perhaps his most famous work was for The Isle of Wight illustrated (1846).
The present work is the rarest of Calvert's published oeuvre, with just 4 copies recorded in WorldCat and none at auction. It formed the basis… Read More

New York: G.P. Putnam's Sons / The Knickerbocker Press, 1927. Half-Leather. Very Good/No Jacket. Corners a bit rubbed, boards faintly soiled, ink date and owner bookplate of Robert N. Cherry on front flyleaf. 1927 Half-Leather. iv, 325 pp. 8vo. No binder's ticket, but appears to be a contemporary custom rebinding: blue leather spine and corners over blue cloth, gilt titles and rules, top edge gilt, new end sheets. "The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin is the traditional name for the unfinished record of his own life written by Benjamin Franklin from 1771 to 1790; however, Franklin himself appears to have called the work his Memoirs. Although it had a tortuous publication history after Franklin's death, this work has become one of the most famous and influential examples of an autobiography ever written. Franklin's account of his life is divided into four parts, reflecting the different periods at which he wrote them.
