About This Item

NEW YORK: THE MODERN LIBRARY, 1890 TRANSLATED BY BERTHA OVERBECK FROM GERMAN. NICE LOOKING BLACK FAUX LEATHER COVER WITH GOLD DESIGN AND PRINT. GOOD SHAPE, FORMER OWNER NAME FRONT, TIGHT. R. L. MACY & CO. IMPRINT. NO DATE, ESTIMATE LATE 1800S. Hermann Sudermann was born in Matziken, East Prussia, on Sept. 30, 1857. He described his youthful poverty in Das Bilderbuch meiner Jugend (1922). He found initial success in Berlin with his novel Frau Sorge (1887), in which an East Prussian farmer triumphs over poverty and other vicissitudes through dedication to hard work, self-reliance, and self-sacrifice. Frau Sorge ( ¿Dame Care¿) is the first of Hermann Sudermann's complete novels (1887) and the work which brought him his fame as a writer of fiction. The story is conceived around the imaginative legend of Frau Sorge, with which the story ends. It is the story of a mother so poor and lonely that she had no one to act as godmother for her son except Dame Care, who offers to see that the boy grows up to be a good man who shall never go hungry if his mother will give the boy's soul, with his youth and his hope of happiness, as a hostage to Dame Care. 1776 Bookstore, where history lives.
