No place: Privately Published, 1925. Paperback First edition 8" x 5.25". 54pp. Printed sewn wrappers. Somewhat soiled and worn; good condition. NOT near fine. The text of this booklet is Douglas' reply to Lawrence's vicious character attack on Maurice Magnus, in his introduction to Magnus's Memoirs Of The Foreign Legion By M.M. Magnus was described as a little fussy fellow and his account further characterizes him as a man totally convinced of his higher class standing. Even when flat broke Magnus still refused to make his own dinners, sleep in lower class hotels, or take 2nd or 3rd class transportation. He simply borrowed more money from his very tolerant friends. He was clearly a fish out of water when he showed up for his service in the Legion older, smarter, idealistic, well off, and at least in his mind a member of the upper class. Eventually, after miserable treatment by the French military, he deserted and slipped away to Italy. His debt eventually caught up to him Magnus killed himself in his hotel room rather than be taken away by the police sent to arrest him and who were waiting outside his door.

None: Privately Printed, 1924. First edition. Paperback. Fine. 8" by 5". None. An exceptional copy of Norman Douglas' response to D H Lawrence's attack on American traveller Maurice Magnus. The first edition, first impression of this privately printed work.A fantastic copy, which is in a fine condition. Uncommon for a copy of this work in such a lovely condition. With the tipped in price note and the acquisition details on a pink slip of paper as called for.Norman Douglas wrote this work as a reply to D.H Lawrence's attack on Maurice Magnus in his introduction to 'Memoirs of the Foreign Legion'. Douglas and Lawrence were both friends of Magnus, and Douglas was his literary executor. Lawrence's introduction to the memoir was used to sell the book, but Douglas felt he had maligned his dear friend. This feud between Douglas and Lawrence was long-running and this publication was the first foray into the public sphere of the voicing of Douglas' distaste. In the publisher's original paper wraps.…
