Broadside advertising regular performances of African American "Plantation Spirituals" at South Carolina's Cypress Gardens and sung "...entirely by local colored people connected with Dean Hall Plantation and its neighboring Promise Land Church." The broadside and accompanying Cypress Gardens information sheet and map are of the tourist literature genre and likely date from the 1940s-1950s.¹
"Cypress Gardens is offering a unique opportunity to hear a type of singing which has been part of American Folklore but is fast disappearing.... The following traditional spirituals will be sung: Old Time Religion...Hand Me Down The Silver Trumpet...Swing Low, Sweet Chariot...I Shall Not Remove; Jacob's Ladder; Down By The Riverside..."
