About This Item
xviii+283 pages with maps, plates, figures, tables, charts, illustrations, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. From the library of Sinclair Hood. First edition.
The pre-classical civilization of the Cycladic islands has fascinated people ever since nineteenth-century travelers saw fine objects from Bronze Age Tombs, including the marble figurinnes which have continued to stimulate the artistic imagination. In recwent years the islands have become a focus of tourism and Thera (Santorini), with its spectacular volcanic geology and buried Bronze Age town (Akrotin), has regained something of its prehistoric magnetism.
Martin Sinclair Frankland Hood (1917-2021), generally known as Sinclair Hood, was a British archaeologist and academic. He was Director of the British School of Archaeology at Athens from 1954 to 1962, and led the excavations at Knossos from 1957 to 1961.
Condition: Hood's stamp to half title with his pencil marginalia. Edge wear corners bumped else very good.
