An uncommon first edition copy of James Greenwood's 'Curiosities of Savage Life', in a full polished calf binding with marbled endpapers and textblock. James Greenwood was a British social explorer, journalist and writer. Collated complete, with nine coloured plates from water-colour drawings by Friedrich Wilhelm Keyl and Richard Huttula and numerous black and white wood-cut illustrations from designs by Harden S. Melville and engraved by H. Newsom Woods. Featuring an ink inscription of a 'J. Wilfrid Jackson' from Manchester, dated 1916; being that of the renowned British archaeologist and geologist John Wilfrid Jackson (1880-1978) who worked at the Manchester Museum, served as secretary to the Manchester Geological Association, and lived and taught in Manchester for most of his life. Condition: In a full polished calf binding with elaborate gilt embellishment to spine and marbled endpapers and textblock. Externally generally smart with slight bumping to extremities and head and tail of spine. Slight rubbing to joints and handling marks to boards. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean, with the oddlight scattered spot to the endpapers. Prior owner's ink inscription to the half title page, dated '1916'. Overall Condition: Very Good Indeed.

Leather spines and marbled paper boards with gilt spine titles and decoration; soiled, dulled, with heavy rubbing and edgewear including frayed edges. Volume one is missing a fly leaf that followed the text, and volume two is missing the last leaf of text (pages 417-418); a prior owner has written in additional text in pencil. Interior hinges repaired; the free endpapers of the marbled endsheets for volume two have been replaced with photocopies of original endsheets. Pages toned, soiled, free of notes or underlining except for the last extant page of volume two as indicated.

Red stamped and engraved boards with large, bright gilt graphic to front board depicting a loinclothed native,wielding a spear, and the entire spine taken up with engravings, and designs, heavy on the gilt. Rubbing to extremities with 1/4 inch loss of cloth across top of spine. All edges gilt. Hinges both started, but book very solidly bound. Chocolate brown endpapers, with bookseller's ticket (W. Bones & Son, Fleet St.) to bottom of rear pastedown. With numerous woodcuts and designs by Harden S. Melville; Engraved by H. Newsom Woods, and six, full-page colour illustrations from water-colour drawings by F.W. Keyl and R. Huttula. This is the colonial, ethnocentric, supercilious culture at its worst, and Greenwood concentrates on the extremes of sensationalism (blood rituals, coming-of-age bloody floggings, horrible live-slaughtering of animals, etc.), which would disgust…
