About This Item
London: Macmillan and Co., Ltd., 1903. First published in the late 1850s and early 1860s, the books were so popular that they went through several reprints during the second half of the twentieth century. This uniform set are dated between 1903 and 1905. 4 volumes: xxi, 362: xxiv,360; xvi,353; xi,365pp. Each volume has either 7 or 8 full page black & white illustrations plus a frontispiece. Hardback. Matching contemporary red half calf over red cloth with contrasting title panels and gilt to spines. Gilt top edges. Marbled endpapers. Books in good condition. Uniform colour and wear. Boards a little rubbed with some marking and minor soiling. Some wear to leather - mostly to extremities of spines but also to some corner pieces. Sporadic but light spotting throughout. All volumes have the printed bookplate of W. S. Tegner to front pastedowns and ink ownership inscriptions in Latin to front fly. No jackets. A nice set of this popular classic.
