IDB Productions, 2017-01-01. MP3 CD. New. Eamont was an opium clipper formed in Cowes. It was the plot of a paper published in 1891, A voyage in an opium clipper, by Captain Lindsay Anderson. Eamont participated in the foundational of Japan to immigrants, working as a communications ship among Nagasaki and Shanghai, and was among the first ships to build a business with Formosa. The Eamont was taken on several extremely perilous voyages. Description:
London: Chapman and Hall,, 1891. First edition of this uncommon account of opium smuggling and seafaring in China onboard the armed schooner Eamont, written pseudonymously by Alexander Christie (1841-1895). Christie would eventually rise to the rank of captain in the merchant marine. As the author notes, "the opium trade and its clippers were the advanced guard that paved the way for commerce in China, which brought in its train the missionary, although he came to denounce what he styled such immoral traffic, always forgetting for the time to look at home, with its many, many ways of curiously making millionaires" (p. 240). The Eamont, weighing 200 tons with a mainboom of 110 feet, was built in Cowes and first saw action in China during the Taiping Rebellion. It was one of the first Western vessels to trade with Formosa and completed the first survey of the Taku (Tanggu) port. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, front board lettered in black with vignette of gilt clipper against a…
