Hardcover. 8vo. 19cm, xii,265p., original green cloth, black and gilt stamped decorations, borders and titles on the spine and cover, beveled boards, top and bottom spine edges worn else a very good sound copy. ~ Loeber p1085. Religious and moral instruction in the form of a story of the trials of a family of orphan children at the hand of various types of proselytizers. The book speaks harshly of American Protestantism. It describes various aspects of American life, such as railroad construction (Brown)". The author resigned his position a rector of the University of St. Mary in Chicago, to become a missionary to the Chippewa Indians and in 1875 to gold miners in Eureka, California.
