About This Item

New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1942. This is a Very Good (Plus) to Near Fine copy of the First Edition (Scribner's "A" on CP). Green cloth binding with silver lettering on the spine and a decorative panel featuring an egret on the front cover. Clean text; 368 pages. Yellow topstain, others rough-cut. This copy has been SIGNED by associates of Rawlings: Norton Baskin (her husband); and Dessie Smith Prescott, Idella Parker and Jake Glisson. In 1992 South Moon came out with a limited edition with the same signatures; Quercus speculates that this First Edition copy was signed at that time. The lovely decorations are by Edward Shenton. Spine slightly darkened and with the silver title rubbed; else a Fine copy. The dustjacket is unclipped, but there is no price; possibly a later addition. A moderate amount of edgewear, with several small chips, but colors remain very bright and it presents very nicely. In an archival plastic protector.. Signed by Husband & Others. First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Very Good Plus. Illus. by Edward Shenton. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

Synopsis

Originally published in 1942, Cross Creek has become a classic in modern American literature. For the millions of readers raised on The Yearling, here is the story of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's experiences in the remote Florida hamlet of Cross Creek, where she lived for thirteen years. From the daily labors of managing a seventy-two-acre orange grove to bouts with runaway pigs and a succession of unruly farmhands, Rawlings describes her life at the Creek with humor and spirit. Her tireless determination to overcome the challenges of her adopted home in the Florida backcountry, her deep-rooted love of the earth, and her genius for character and description result in a most delightful and heartwarming memoir.
