About This Item

New York: The Macmillan Company, 1930. First Edition, First Printing. Cloth. Near fine/very good. First edition of The Car of Croesus by Ernest Poole, in the publisher's first state dust jacket.. Octavo, 230pp. Navy blue cloth, title in gilt on front cover and spine. Stated "Published March, 1930" on copyright page. Solid text block, toning to endpapers with offsetting from flap folds, a near fine example. In the publisher's first state dust jacket, $2.00 retail price on front flap, short closed tear to rear panel, chipping to tips of spine, tape repairs to verso. An attractive example of the scarce, metallic art deco jacket. The Car of Croesus is the story of an impoverished Russian prince and a New York businesswoman, who purchase a limousine which they rent to people who wish to pass themselves off as millionaires. The prince takes the role of chauffeur, and the woman plays the role of lady's maid. A comedy and tragedy about New York's social hierarchy.
