About This Item

The Noonday Press (Farrar, Straus & Giroux), 1965. Soft cover. Fair. 189 pages. Subtitled on the cover, "Eight Essays on Literature and Education," the posthumously published book assembles previously uncollected essays and lectures. Besides the title lecture, it includes The Aims of Education (1950) and pieces on Ezra Pound, Dante, the classics, and American literature and language. Trade paperback, wraps soiled, spine creased and torn, light foxing to edges. The description as "fair" refers to the binding, which has been repaired at different times with both tape and glue; all pages are present, some are loose or a little damaged along binding, and text block is in two not entirely even blocks. The interior pages are bright and for the most part clean, with only a few marks. Name of former owner Prof. Warner Berthoff written on ffep, his marginalia on approximately five pages in the 1953 lecture "American Literature and the American Language.
