About This Item

London: Chapman and Hall, 1910. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. London, Chapman and Hall, [1910s]. Octavo; cloth a little flecked, rubbed and bumped; frontispieces and title-pages offset (due to the high acid content of the tissue-guards), endpapers less so; two endpapers nibbled at the top edge with minor loss; first volume slightly cracked at the inner hinge (but sound); a very good set (uniform with Carlyle's complete works). With an interesting photograph of a drawing of Blanche Stanley, Countess of Airlie, laid down on the front pastedown, and with her signed gift inscription 'to her friend Ida Hankey', dated 26 September 1919. The Countess was a correspondent of Carlyle's.
