About This Item
Victor Daily Record; Victor, Colorado, 1904 This is the true first edition, and rare thus. (The Great Western Publishing Co. editions are second editions.) Green cloth-covered boards, gilt front board lettering and decoration (bright), 8 1/8 x 6 5/8 inches, 248 pp, decorated endpapers, frontispiece b/w photo of the author ("Yours Truly, Mrs. Emma F. Langdon") with tissue guard, multiple b/w photo illustrations and cartoons (including one fold-out: "United States reduction and refining plant at Colorado City, whose General Manager, C.M. M'Neill, is alleged to be the cause of the Cripple Creek strike because of his arbitrary action in refusing to reinstate the Western Federation members as he is said to have promised to do at the settlement of the preliminary strike"). An excellent, very good copy. The second edition (i.e. the Great Western Publishing Co. edition, copyright 1904-1905, entitled "The Cripple Creek Strike: A History of Indistrial Wars in Colorado 1903-4-5") describes this first edition as follows: (page 255) "When the first edition of "The Cripple Creek Strike" was bound, the work was a complete record of those dark days. At that time I felt that nothing could take place that would surpass the outrages that had been perpetrated upon the citizens of Colorado."; and (page 259) "When I closed the first edition of this work, which forms Part I, it looked as if the industrial conflict might continue for weeks, months or even years, without either side obtaining a victory or anything happening other than recorded in Part I. However, important events have occurred causing me to again use pen, paper and scissors for the purpose of recording events to the close of the gubernatorial contest. I closed the first edition on May 1, 1904." In fact, this copy of the true first edition is suspected to be an early printing, since the copyright statement is present as an inkstamp ("Copyrighted 1904 by Mrs. Emma F. Langdon") rather than printed on a title page (University of Michigan copy). (RBS/K081). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/No Jacket.
