About This Item

London: Stannard & Dixon, 1855. Very good overall. Impressive color lithographic map of up to the minute conditions of a naval battle at the end of the Crimean War, showing the Allied Fleet under Admiral Lyons arrayed at Kinburn Fort, and the mouth of the Dnieper or Kerson Bay, which is present day Ukraine. This battle, in which the British and French bombarded the Russian forts, is notable for the successful use by the French of ironclad ships, convincing contemporary navies to abandon wooden ships, and leading to the destruction of the forts in very short order. With the subhead "There are two forts commanding the mouth of the bay of Kerson & the entrance to the River Bug & Dnipier, in which are situate Nicolaieff & Kerson. The fortress of Kinburn surrendered after a bombardment by the Allies. The governor, 1700 prisoners, & 140 cannon. Fort Nicolaieff was evacuated & blown up by the Russians. The Allied fleet are now anchored in the Bay of Kerson & the mouth of the Dnipier." The Crimean War was one of the first wars for which the British public received day to day coverage of the action. Titles in English and French. 29 x 21 1/2". Slightly chipped upper and lower right side.
