About This Item
New York: McFarlane, Warde, McFarlane & The Japan Society, 1936. First edition. Cloth. Good +/good. This work covers the period of Japanese sculpture extending from the 6th century to the nineteenth. Mr. Warner, a former assistant curator of Oriental Art in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was a field fellow of the Fogg Art Museum of Harvard at the time of publication, and also authored JAPANESE SCULPTURE OF THE SUIKO PERIOD. 8.25"x11.25". 55 pages text + 85 b/w plates, each blank on verso, with accompanying description on facing page. Dust jacket is wrapped in Brodart and, while chipped, is holding up pretty well for it's age. Age darkening is especially evident on back panel, however, it is not price-clipped, as I discovered when I realized the original price was $5 - it looks too slick for that time period, especially for a large book, but it was indeed produced in 1936. Which, from a historical perspective, was in the nick of time. A few more years and Mr. Warner would have had to delay this particular scholarly study for quite some time.
