Inscribed "To Willard / Alec Kirkbride. M.C." on the half-title page. Originally a soldier in Allenby's army, Kirkbride later went to Transjordan to take control of the power vacuum there, establishing himself as president of Kerak until Abdullah took control. He served Abdullah and was a powerful leader in the region, far more than a consul. He later was British ambassador to Amman, and played an important role in the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. The inscription is to (Reverend) A. Willard Jones, and American who headed up two Quaker schools in the region, and also was engaged in relief work and aid to displaced persons in the area. Ownership signature of Jones on front flyleaf. 8vo red cloth. PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings, unless we specifically note otherwise.
