Early days in Cowlitz County, Washington, which includes the towns of Castle Rock, Kalama, Kelso, Longview and Woodland, are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this brand new 56-page 11" x 8.5" spiral-bound book, printed on 60# opaque paper. The front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The book includes a reprint of a book called Cowlitz County Washington 1854 - 1947, written by Mrs. Charles Olson in 1947, and an excerpt from Washington, a Guide to the Evergreen State, a WPA project from1941. The first part of the book includes a description of the county and its location, early explorers including the Lewis and Clark expedition, the formation of the State of Washington from the Oregon Territory and Cowlitz County as one of the state's original 7 counties; four county seats, Industries of the county; the Fort of Longview; Forests and lumbering; the Fishing Industry; Agriculture; Mail in pioneer days; Churches; Schools; Transportation; the towns of Kelso, West Kelso, Woodland, Longview, Pleasant Hill, Stella and others; Mt. St. Helen's; Some Firsts; the Flood of 1894; Silver Lake Pioneers; Community Interests; Prices in 1879; Cowlitz Indians; and other items of interest. The WPA section includes includes a section on Longview with various points of interest, and brief stops at Stella, Eagle Cliff, Coffin Rock, the Lewis and Clark State Park, Toledo, Barnes State Park, Castle Rock, Ostrander, Kelso, Kalama, etc. Illustrations include the interstate bridge in Longview, the Port of Longview, Mt. Coffin, the '94 flood, Mt. St. Helen's, R.A. Long High School, the old Freeport School Dist. No. 1 building, the First Methodist Church in Kelso, the Cowlitz County Court House and many others. .
