About This Item
Oxon: Printed by H. Hall for Tho. Gilbert, 1672. Hardcover. Good. 4 volumes bound in 3. (35), 85, (3), 152, 115, (44), 512, [1], (22), 238, (12), 14, (160, 528, (2), 345-416p. Old, possibly contemporary, leather on all volumes although there are some differences in hubbing, stamping, etc. on each of the volumes suggesting this set was assembled from odd volumes at some point. One obvious difference is that the backstrip of the final volume has 5 hubs while the first two volumes have 4 hubs. 20cm. Covers somewhat worn and scuffed on first two volumes. Cover on the third volume is more worn -- the front cover is detached and the backstrip is heavily chipped at ends and feels rougher to the touch. All edges marbled on the third volume but unmarbled on the first two volumes. All volumes internally sound although the third volume has a few scattered brown spots. Vols. I and II have ownership inking from different owners in upper right corner of their title-pages while the third volume appears to have no ownership markings other than an old, now blank circular paper seal in upper left corner of front cover. According to an online site (oxfordscholarship.com), Gale, a Puritan Calvinist in Great Britain, argues in this work that all ancient language, knowledge and philosophy derived from the Jews who had received it as divine revalation.
