Hardcover. 12mo, 18.5cm, first U.S. edition, first issue, iv,[7],215,12p., rear publisher's ads., original blind decorated ribbed brown cloth, gilt spine titles, top (chipped) and bottom spine edge rubbed else a very good to fine copy - a single leaf publisher's advertisement for "Waverley Novels" tipped in at front (lt) ~ BAL 12122. The first American appearance of Longfellow's narrative poem of the early days of the Plymouth colony of Massachusetts. With a collection of his poems, under the title, "Birds of Passage", that includes "My Lost Youth". The first issue (of 4 for 1858) with "treacherous" for "ruddy" in the 3rd line, page 124 (changed by Longfellow's direction on further issues).
