The protagonist is an aging German general, a war hero who was blinded at Stalingrad and who foresees the German defeat, and recalls a centuries-old German tradition of the Fehme -- the avenging knights who emerged from time to time to rescue the fatherland using terrorist tactics and fostering national spirit in the style of the Ku Klux Klan.
