Full calf leather binding, expertly rebacked with original spine laid over. Spine has five raised bands with gilt decorated compartments. Gilt ruled border to boards. Some foxing to text, staining to outside margin of several pages. Previous owner's name to title page: 'Cath. Curtis', and gift inscription to title page: 'John Walpole Willis from W.P. (?) Willis'. John Walpole Willis was a judge of the Supreme Court of New South Wales, Australia, and resident judge at Melbourne. This volume came from the estate of his son, John William Willis-Bund. The scarce first edition of this collection by William Jones of Nayland, best known for 'An Essay on the First Principles of Natural Philosophy' where he opposed the theories of Sir Isaac Newton. ESTC T83898. Overall condition is Very Good. Size: 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.5 cm). Hardback. Printed pages: 8vo. [4], 466. Lacking the final advertisement leaf.
