In very good condition with good dustwrapper (dw; Spine slightly darkened, some marks to rear. Tears to corners with some loss to top end of spine. Price clipped). Neat inscription to front endpaper. Else a very clean and tight copy. With b/w frontis. With fold out map at back. One of a set of books describing the Counties of the British Isles as they existed before 1973. This volume covers Durham. The county differs from other counties of England in that it was ruled independently by its Palatine Bishops. The author traces the growth and development of the county over two volumes of which this is the second. The author continues the story with the advent of the industrial revolution, and the Victorian age up to the mid 20th Century. He covers the social and political history, as well as the development of education and the University, the end of the Paltinate. There are appendices of the Bishops of Durham, Tree of Neville and List of Durham Churches.
