About This Item
The Country Life Book of Nursery Rhymes, Compiled by Mitchell, Susanne. Published by Country Life Books, London, 1984. Second printing. 4to up to 12" tall. 176 pages with frontispiece and 30 full page colour reproductions of original Royal Doulton tile pictures; with list of titles; index to artists index of rhymes and hospitals where originals were located. Brown cloth boards with gilt spine titles. Contents as new; unclipped dust-jacket has light shelf wear. From 1890 to 1914, the establishment of special children's hospitals and wards led to a number of hospitals commissioning Doulton, Lambeth (now known as Royal Doulton) to create hand-painted tile mosaics of children's nursery rhymes and fairy tales. "The tiles were recognized as being hygienic and the picture on them could be used to both amuse and cheer up the young patients". While the mosaics still adorn some hospital walls, many were destroyed, lost or damaged over the years. Today existing tiles are highly valued and efforts made to preserve and/or restore their beauty.
