About This Item

London: Robert Hale, 1956. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. The first edition in English, translated from the German by Eleanor Brockett. The author's first book. Set in the 1920s in Mexico, it tells the story of Gerald Gales, who drifts in and out of jobs - on a cotton plantation, an oil field, in a pastry shop, and on a ranch - exposing the dangerous exploitation at each station and fomenting workers' rights along the way. Octavo. Original black cloth binding, with gilt tites. Tiny bump to the bottom corner of the front board. The dust jacket is a trifle edgeworn, with some mild offsetting from old cellophane tape repairs to the verso; otherwise very good.
