London: John Murray, 1831. First Edition, First Impression First Printing. Half Leather. Good. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Half leather binding with titling and gilt decoration to spine. Marbled paper-covered boards. Sprinkled page edges. Plain endpapers. A clean copy without foxing other than a sprinkling to front and back matter. Bookplate of John Oxberry to front pastedown, his inscription to ffep, and his notes to blank between eps and title page but nowhere else in the book. Between pages 200 and 201, there is offsetting in the style of a Rorschach inkblot, from a piece of paper used as a bookmark. I see a vampire bat - make of that what you will. Binding in reasonable condition with wear to leather, paper and boards. Corners, spine tips, and joints rubbed but boards safely attached. Hinges split, a few pages of front matter loosening but o/w solid. As the text block is clean, this scarce volume would be the worthy beneficiary of a new binding. It is, however, a decent enough copy as is. First edition, first impression, 1831. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. Isaac Basire (1607 - 1676) was an English Anglican divine and traveller. A chaplain to Charles I, he left Britain during the Civil War, and travelled to Greece and Asia Minor, with the ambition of converting the Eastern Orthodox churches to Anglicanism. He returned to England in 1661, following the restoration of the monarchy under Charles II. Additional photos available on request or these may be viewed on my listing. All orders professionally packed, tracked and/or signed for, and insured.
