About This Item

London: J. Osborn, 1749. First printing. Hardcover. Very Good. 8vo, period dark brown calf, original spine label intact, very good, some rubbing to binding and light cracking to outer joints, but still well bound and with contents clean. SIGNED by Leigh on the title page, and bearing the bookplate of John Montagu, Earl of Sandwich. 260 pp. Lists the voters and results of a fiercely contested election between the Duke of Bedford's brother-in-law, Viscount Trentham, and Sir George Vandeput, the anti-court candidate. A scrutiny eventually confirmed Trentham's re-election as MP for Westminster. Viscount Trentham and Montagu, the owner of this book, were allies in supporting the aims and policies of John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford, contrary to the aims of the administration under Henry Pelham. Bedford's removal from the ministry in 1751 was effected by dismissing Sandwich and thereby provoking Bedford's resignation; Trentham left too. Thus, a fine association copy of this important poll book.
