Original dark green cloth boards, blind ruled and stamped, gilt-stamped title and intricate foliate border to upper board. Original yellow endpapers. Bruising to extremities, wear to bottom corners. Rubbed and lightly soiled, crease to front board near joint. Small tear at top of joint of upper board skilfully repaired, spine lined and first third of plates re-attached. POI to ffep: 'To dear Gladys/ With Father's love/ 1 March 1900'. Occasional spotting, else, internally clean and bright. Known by the epithet 'Cow Cooper,' due to his prolific output of cattle paintings, the successful Victorian artist depicted romanticised farm animals and pastoral scenes, as seen here. A good, clean copy of an unusual book. 1 copy of the Ward & Lock edition listed on WorldCat & held at the BL (NB the BL dates it as 183?, but given that Ward and Lock was founded in 1853, with its first premises being 158 Fleet Street, sometime in the 1850s is more likely).
