About This Item

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1874. First American edition, published same year as first English edition. Octavo. xiv, 510 pp. Two folding maps, sixteen engraved plates, and twelve engraved illustrations in text. Publisher's blue cloth with beveled edges, gilt spine lettering, brown endpapers. Light overall wear and unusual hatched emboss mark to margin of frontispiece portait, else a very good copy. A classic book on Africa, by Stanley, the famous explorer, special correspondent to The New York Herald, and author of In Darkest Africa and How I Found Livingstone. "'Coomassie and Magdala: the Story of Two British Campaigns in Africa,' is the title I have chosen for this volume, written to record two grand successes gained by English soldiers in East and West Africa.…A greater contrast could not be made than is presented by the story of the two expeditions which England undertook in Africa, in behalf of her honour, her dignity, humanity, and justice; and more brilliant successes than attended these two campaigns in hostile countries are not recorded in history" (Preface).
