Green cloth, gilt lettering to upper board (faded). Shabby, tanned edges, red pen mark to fore-edge. 'Civil Service Comm' stamp to front pastedown and title page. Toned, a few closed tears. Spine cracked and cracking in several places, but binding holding firm. Else, clean. Sketches booklets: staples rusted, with small amount of staining in the two questionnaire booklets, a little toned and a few finger marks; small nick to corner of one. Else, all clean. Comprising an introduction and subsequent reflection on the experimental methodology, plus case studies based on a range of children's and adults' answers and sketches; the effects of war and poverty run through all the pen portraits. A good copy of a fascinating early psychological kit previously owned by the Civil Service Commission. Rare. John Carlyle Raven (1902�1970) was a British psychologist, who specialised in psychometrics. He developed Raven's Progressive Matrices (RPM), a non-verbal group test for educational settings, which is still in use today. From 1944 - the year of publication - Raven was Director of Psychological Research at the Crichton Royal Hospital in Dumfries, Scotland. The Civil Service Commission regulates recruitment to the Civil Service, as well as hearing complaints under the Civil Service Code. It is independent from both the British Government and the Civil Service. Presumably, this title, amongst others, would have been used, or considered, by psychologists in some aspect of the Civil Service recruitment process.
