London: Macmillan and Co., 1875. xvi, 384, 31pp, [1]. With a terminal publisher's advertisement catalogue. Original publisher's green cloth, lettered in gilt to spine. Rubbed and marked, loss to head and foot of spine, corners bumped. Hinges exposed, later inked gift inscription to title page, scattered spotting. An early edition by this colleague of Darwin and fellow proponent of evolution, reproducing highly important articles that appeared in numerous learned periodicals, tracing Wallace's scientific thought from the Sarawak statement on the laws of species, to his theories of natural selection as applied to man. . Second edition. 8vo.
