New York: Whitney Museum of American Art, 1991. Paperback. First edition. Near Fine paperback with a hint of rubbing at the extremities, a light stain at one edge, and a touch of shelf wear. SHIPS THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING AND CARDBOARD. The catalogue for an exhibition held at the Whitney Museum of American Art, Downtown at Federal Reserve Plaza, June 19 - Aug. 30, 1991. The theme of the exhibit was how the art chosen for three mid-century exhibitions presented radically different ideas of "American" and "American art." The shows under scrutiny were "American Art Today," held at the 1939-40 New York World's Fair; "The New American Painting," a 1958-59 traveling exhibition of Abstract Expressionist painting organized by the International Council of the Museum of Modern Art, and a selection of new artworks, mostly Pop, that was displayed on the exterior of the New York State Pavilion of the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Texts by Eric Miles, Andrew Perchuk, Elizabeth Bigham, and Ellen Tepfer. Staple-bound stiff wraps; 20 pages; b&w reproductions throughout; 10 x 6.5 inches.
