This is a book written by Leola Rachel Howard Blanchard (1886-1975) that was to be only about Finney County, but was expanded to include the surrounding counties and make the book about Southwest Kansas, specifically to leave an imperishable record of what this country was like in the beginning and how it was transformed by settler hands into its present-day comforts and prosperity. Finney county came into existence in about 1880 but its recorded history goes back much earlier to the Indian tribes and the Buffalo. This book covers the early history of the region and its counties, its prominent people and settlers, The Santa Fe Trail days, Cattle herds, developments, railroads, agriculture, irrigation, schools, Fort Dodge, Indian Raids, town officials, and the Sugar Company. This is a very presentable copy full of information about the region up to 1931.
