Rodriguez Freile's shafts of humour and satire tell much of New Grenada (which we now know as Colombia). The reason why, of all the writings to come out of that vast territory over the three centuries of the colonial period, this is still the most read and the best loved, is perhaps because he tells so much more of human nature.
