Called "America's first epic poem," the narrative is a "roman a clef" in which Joshua's conquest of Canaan suggests the struggle under Washington. Contemporary events and characters are mentioned throughout the work. Called "an audacious attempt to give the New World an epic such as the Iliad was to Greece, and the Aeneid, to Rome" --DAB V, 575
