London: Royal Geographical Society, 1886. Three accounts, altogether 29 pages. Plus a large fold-out colour map, measuring approximately 17 x 17 inches (43 x 43cm). Original condition with blue wrappers, titles to front, and containing all the ads. This is a complete issue, seldom found in such good and original condition. A most important set of three monumentous Congo expedition accounts, accompanied by a spectacular fold-out colour map of the Free State. The discussion section includes comments, and important detail by the notorious Mr. H. M. Stanley himself. From July 1885 to 1886, Sir Francis Walter de Winton became Stanley's successor in the administration of the Congo, in his valuable and fascinating report he shed some light on the explorations of the Kasai river, its tributaries, and the Congo, recounting the most important explorations conducted while he was the administrator-general of the Congo, including those of Lieut. Wissmann - noted African explorer and German colonial official - and his companions, Dr. Wolff, Lieuts. Moeller and Francois, and Messrs Schneider and Buchner as well as Grenfell, Lieuts. Schmidt, Kauntz, and Dr. Buchner, and Dr. Oscar Lenz. With amazing remarks on his encounters with native tribes while traveling down the Kasai river on a steamer called "Stanley"; according to him most natives were friendly and eager to trade and barter except Basongamino tribe, who have treacherously attacked Lieut. Wissmann on his journey down the Kasai. Winton's account is replete with captivating comments on the tribal customs, Arab slave and ivory traders, elephant hunting, and adventurous explorations. Also included here are some extracts from a letter sent by Dr. Oscar Lenz and some notes on Mr. Stanley's latest work "On the Congo, and the Founding of its Free State." Rev. George Grenfell of the Baptis Mission, established headquarters at Arthington, near Leopoldville, in 1884, and launched on Stanley Pool a river steam vessel, the Peace, in which he explored the Kiva, the Kwango, and the Kasai rivers, discovered the Ruki, or Black River, and ascended the Mubangi (Mobangi), Juapa, Loika, and Maringa River, and other small tributaries of the Congo to Grenfell Falls, at lat. 4° 40' N. The third report recounts the German Congo expedition in 1884-6, which composed of Lieut. Ed. Schulze, Dr. Büttner, Dr. Wolff, Lieut. Kund, and Lieut. Tappenbeck. A succint but very fascinating account with remarks on ivory trades, villages and the inhabitants, as well as dangerous encounter with Bavumbo tribe in which Kund was injured by three arrows. .
