About This Item
New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 1924 Book. Very Good +. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Large Thick Octavo. Large Thick 8vo. xxii, 404 pp, illus. First Edition, 1924. Owner's ex libris plate on front pastedown. Only the slightest edge wear with age-toned text block and margin edges, else, no wear. No markings, tight binding and clean. 6.5" x 9.5". Dark-red cloth with gilt lettering to spine. "8 Essays on Pepys, Benjamin Disraeli, William Monson, Thomas Blood, Cromwell, John Wentworth, The Venerable Bede, and John Scott, as the title suggests, are bound by a common thread. Each in its way is an illustration of the vicissitudes of fame, a story of the struggle to achieve reputation, and the adventures of those reputations once they were achieved; not so much biographical essays as studies in the universal conflict with oblivion.".
